Against the backdrop of globalization, cities are increasingly challenged to maintain sustainable economic development and a livable urban environment. Whether big or small, it will be ‘smart cities’ making the difference in the future. Crucial for smart cities will be sensor networks that continuously monitor the quality of the environment. The goal of our assignment was to design how environmental data could influence when and where people go for their outdoor activities. We designed Coach.

Coach will help users plan their run under the best circumstances. During the intake the user will point out which triggers are most crucial to take into account. A combination of these triggers and real-time environmental data will give users suggestions for the best running moments. Coach could really make a difference for people with asthma.
With over half a million asthma patients in the Netherlands, asthmatic people are our target audience. When you are asthmatic you have to deal with asthma attacks. These attacks can be triggered by for instance, pollen, pollution or a high humidity. This is one of the reasons people with the disease will not work out as much as they would like.
